Remove headphones and listen.

Zone In

by Sis Cat

Instead of zoning out,
I zone in—
into myself,
into my surroundings
as I ascend
this mountain trail.

I resist the temptation
to listen to headphones.

Instead,
I listen to
the music of my feet
crunching this path,
the harmony of wind
blowing through leaves,
and the melody of the collar
tinkling around my dog.

I want to yank headphones
from the ears of passing joggers
and scream, “Listen—
listen to your surroundings!”

Instead,
I zone in
on the patch of blue
up ahead
at the crest
of this mountain
as I merge
into the sky.
