Grandma's Tale

by Heather Knight

'Snuggle close,
My little one.
I'll tell the story
Of how your grandpa
Fought in the war.'

'Was that, grandma,
Long long ago?'

'It was the year
nineteen-eighteen
And I was young,
Of wrinkles free.'

'And where was I,
Grandma dear?
Was I hiding
Just out of fright?'

'No, no, my dear
This was before
You were born.
When I was young...'

'But grandma,
I thought I'd always
been here...
How come...?'

'It's getting late,
Let me tell you
How brave
Your grandpa was.'

'But grandpa is old.
He walks so slowly.
He's gruff and scary
And forgets my name.'

'Oh, yes, my darling.
But this was so long ago,
We were in love
We had the power
To change the world.
Now, stop speaking.
Let me dream on
Let me tell the story
Of my young love.'
