About Spanish Bureaucracy

The Spanish Inquisition

by Dolly'sPoems

The Spanish Inquisition
Vive Espana!

From ceilings tall, a fan did whirl,
On metal chairs we sat;
Numbers were called, and my heart stalled,
By a pompous bureaucrat.
Numbers appeared, and many jeered,
When their number's read;
Eight more to show before my go,
Before my word is said.

The clock slowed down, the time somehow,
Moved at a snail's pace;
It was so hot, the sweat dropped off,
No air-con in this place.
At last I share another chair;
A frowning woman sneered,
No Ingles, we are in Spain?
And everybody cheered!

I try to explain, it was a pain,
I think she understood;
A printed sheet was nice and neat
And stamped with a great thud.
I was then, marched to a den,
More faces winced in fear;
I waited with my breath abated,
Will I ever get out of here?

The line was strong, I stood too long,
No chair to rest my feet,
My spirit broken, my ticket token,
Would almost be complete.
But no, no, no, I came to know,
The note held in my hand,
Was not enough, procedure tough,
My case could not defend.

Another queue, and cud to chew,
All patience now is tossed!
My anger clear, there was a cheer!
And further time is lost.
My hands threw up, this poor set-up,
Like peasants we all gather;
Our mercy plea, to be set free,
But the people never matter.

In Spain everything is so bureaucratic. To change the name on the electricity bill or on your water bill is almost impossible! My water bill has the previous owners name on it who died in 2006. I have been trying to put it in my name for 8 years. I have so many documents now but obviously not the correct one. So I gave up. They take the DD payment out of my bank in my name but will not put the bill in my name. Its totally crazy.

You go to the town hall, take a ticket and wait for your number to appear and then battle in another language with someone who really does not want to do the job. You can imagine the frustration, but we all put up with it.
