A Desert of the Mind

My Lost Muse

by Cass Carlton

Devil's whelp! where have you gone?
My friends are inspired with Yule tide verse
I sit like a dummy with fingers of stone
With no words of rhyme to help me converse.

Miserable hatchling! Why do you hide?
Do I not heed your every command?
Come! Whisper your words while you sit by my side
Let me into the ranks of that talented band.

Perverse and uncaring! You leave me bereft!
Although what I ask you can do in a blink
No Christmas story or poem is left
My quill is dry and the well has no ink.

The Muse has gone! Where I know not. These few words were dredged up from the depths of a dry well. No water drips or trickles in an enticing, tongue moistening stream from its once bountiful source. This happens every so often, but She (the wayward one, My Muse) usually returns after a week or so. Ten days at the most. But not this time. It has been weeks since I wrote anything worthwhile. Brain fade? What ever! I'll have to wait it out until she lights my lamp again. Until then my friends, I'll be thinking of you. All the best Cass
