Daybreak Caper

by Sharon Meda

Reaching under my pillow, I shut off the muffled cell phone alarm and sat up slowly without creaking the bed springs. Avoiding the squeaky floor boards, I grabbed a granola bar from the kitchen for my breakfast; no time for anything else.

Slipping into my boots, I glanced at the clock; 4:37, it would be light soon.

Once outside, I reached under the deck for the bag and shovel l'd placed there last night.

Rushing towards the lake, I cursed as I stubbed my toe on a rock, 'Come on daylight.'

Digging beside the water, I found seven big fat night crawlers. Scooping them into the jar in my bag, I headed for the boat.

Everyone knows night crawlers make the best bait and dawn is best for catching the 'Big One'. Why else would I be creeping around at this hour with a shovel?
