From the book, Fortune Cookies. El attracts hungry shadows
SCENE
Spring 1997, Mary Park Dorm, San Francisco State University, California.
A hand fades into view. The hand is meticulously organizing a group of "Transformers" action figures on a bookshelf. Subtly, his attention to detail is slightly bordering an individual with an over compulsive disorder (OCD).
El's face comes into light as he is now polishing a comic book, "Web of Spider-man" issue #31, that is tacked above his bed.
Playing in a cassette stereo is the '80s song, "I've Been in Love Before" by Cutting Crew. Singing along with an unintentional off key tune, El picks up another cassette tape below his comic, and begins to manually rewind the tape using a pencil edge. From his journal, a small picture of him with a girl catches his eye...
EL (singing along with the song):
"...thing she said. Overheard. Something wrong inside."
Catherine, a neighbor who lives down the dorm hall, walks pass El's door, and laughs as she listens to El's comically off key voice. Catherine's attention is focused at the wall behind the door, where El cannot see. Abruptly walking away, Catherine's body language hints something will soon transpire.
El attempts to shut his door, but before he reaches the doorknob, Chihiro, the girl from his picture, walks in with a small pot of "Forget-Me-Not" flowers.
SONG CONTINUES
(It's you and admit it Ooo Ooo Ooo)
EL
Chihiro! What are you doing here?!
SONG
(Then you know you're in it!)
CHIHIRO (handing the flowers to El)
I came by to give you these.
EL
Myosotis Arvenesis! Forget-Me-Nots! Oh, wow. What for?
SONG
(I've been in love before; I've been in love before)
CHIHIRO
Where I come from, it's what girls do.
EL
Really? They're beautiful!
Chihiro laughs. Her right hand covers her subtle laugh as a gesture of politeness, which is also a common practice in her native country.
EL
What's so funny?
CHIHIRO
You're the only one who says that.
EL
What? Myosotis Arvenesis?
CHIHIRO
No. "Beautiful."
SONG
(I've been in love before; I've been in love before)
EL
People still say, "Beautiful."
CHIHIRO
But, they don't mean it...like you do.
EL
I was referring to the color schematics of the petals which are...
Chihiro interrupts El mid-sentence. Breaking from tradition, her right hand becomes uncharacteristically aggressive and, out of desperation, grabs El's head from behind.
SONG
(Just one touch; Just one look)
*Music is at its loudest in this scene.
CHIHIRO
El, don't be stupid.
SONG
(A dangerous dance)
Chihiro pulls El's head toward her lips. Their eyes harmoniously close as they engage in a romantic kiss.
Upon releasing her grip...
SONG
(One small word can make me feel)
EL
Chihiro, there's been something I've been wanting to tell you...
CHIHIRO
Yes?
EL
Since that day I first saw you sitting in the phone booth, you made me believe that love at first sight is more than a...
theory.
SONG
(Like running away)
Instead of her palm, Chihiro uses the side of one hand to cover the emotions that are augmenting inside of her. El's words are what Chihiro has been waiting a long time to hear. She sprints out of the room toward the elevators down the hall. She leaves El without anything except a pot of flowers, and a choice.
SONG
(You can't say you're in it)
El hesitates before a light of common sense flickers in his confusion that is just bright enough to convince him to chase after her.
SONG
(I've been in love before; I've been in love before)
EL
Chihiro! Wait!
Though Chihiro notices El, she rushes into the elevator. As the door begins to close, El makes an attempt to comfort her.
SONG
(The hardest part is when you're in it)
EL (Speaking quickly before the elevator doors close)
Chihiro! Thank you for the flowers! They're perfect for my mom's garden! She's going to love them!
SONG
(I've been in love before; I've been in...)
*The song concludes with an annoying scratch
Before the elevator door completely closes, Chihiro's face awkwardly and comically stares back in disbelief to what she just heard.
El (to himself)
Whew! I'm glad I was able to tell her that her flowers will be fine.
At the last second, before the scene fades, El steps aside.
In the background, standing in the far corner directly behind El, is the spirit of a murdered girl wearing a long white dress. Her face is concealed behind her long black hair. Beside her is the shadow of an all-black figure. They seem to be waiting for something, but there is no reason other than to observe.
Scene fades.
