Puzzlement!

Life Without The Letter A Contest Winner

Boy, oh boy, this weird contest
Is quite the difficult request.
The missing vowel I mustn’t use
Is trying every kind of ruse
To get me muddled so I’ll slip—
He thinks before the end I’ll trip.
He’s chuckling, thinking I’ll forget
To keep him out—well I regret
This vow-el must exclude himself;
It’s best he not include himself.
I’m doing very well, I think,
Though often I’ll be on the brink
Of using words with him inside;
Might let the “little fellow” slide
Unnoticed into my next word
So then I stop!  I’d lose! (cussword!)
Determined he will never win
I’ll fight the fight until the end.
He’ll see his usefulness is just
Some old, forgotten puff of dust.
