Hector

by mermaids

one eye
lost to fervent pecking
he came home
where he was wanted
Hector, you delighted
us for five years
inquisitive, chirping
loudly, watching
the human world
you are thought of often
still here in spirit

When I was young, probably around five years old, my mother bought a gray finch from a pet shop. He only had one eye, other birds had pecked his eye out, we were told. We called him Hector and he was with us for five years before he passed on. The pic of the wild finch is similar in size but Hector was all gray.
