On A Doorstep

by Heather Knight

What do you do when you cannot?
When wisps of smoke
Circle your hair.
When treacherous words
Slide down your tongue,
Into your throat.

What do you do when you cannot?
When fear sits
Within your heart
And your eyes become
A haunted pond.

What do you do when you cannot?
When normal
Is so far away.
When stretching your arms
Is not enough.

You keep on living
When you cannot.
You fight, you forget,
And then one day.
You find a daisy
On your doorstep
Waiting for you
Like an old friend.

That's what you do
When you cannot.
