Sailor Suit

by B.B. Rose

Born in the early days of the Second World War, Annie knew her daddy only as a man in a sailor suit in the black and white snapshots her mom sighed over.

At three, Annie was growing fast and needed new clothes. So one morning, mom took her shopping in a department store. Annie met this new experience with fascination, thoughtfully looking at everything in sight. Suddenly she sat up in her mom’s arms. Pointing to a group of nearby shoppers, she hollered, “Is that my daddy?”

A startled black sailor looked up, grinned, and quickly disappeared into the crowd.
