FRIENDS/NEW ENEMIES
CHAPTER THIRTEEN
PART FOUR
JO TO THE RESCUE
ARIZONA TERRITORY
MAY 1887
Narrated by Jo Wiley Thompson

Ending of the last chapter: Solomon put his arms around Rod and me and lifted us up. “It’s time to go.”

“What about Rod’s sister?”

“It doesn’t look like she wants to leave,” Samuel answered. He started out the door and stopped.
**
“How in Hell did you find us?” Samuel asked Heather.

“Caitlin’s nana led me here.” Heather set her black bag on the table, smiled at him and tried to step around him.

“Who are you referring to; Mrs. Sullivan?” Samuel stepped into the doorway his eyes traveled all around Heather. “I don’t see her anywhere.”

“No, I mean ‘Nana Kennedy.’” Heather took in the scene before her. “I can see why she wanted me to hurry.”

Samuel turned to me. “Would you care to tell me what is going on?”  He glanced at the naked girl, who prayed and screamed curse words.

I stepped closer to Aunt Heather before I answered Samuel. “I asked Nana Kennedy to help Melanie, but she couldn’t.” I shifted my stance, avoiding Samuel’s piercing eyes. “Nana Kennedy brought Aunt Heather here.”

“So you are Jo’s aunt?”  He failed to keep the sarcasm from his voice as he stared at the newcomer.

“Caitlin didn’t have much family; just her mother until her father murdered her. I’ve known Caitlin from the day she was birthed, and over the years, she started to call me ‘Aunt Heather.’” She glanced at me and winked. She touched Melanie’s arm as she passed her.

My aunt turned her attention to Samuel. “If your game of twenty questions is over. I would like to take care of my patients.”

Solomon headed for the door, but Samuel stopped him.

“Don’t you think you’ll need some help?” He stared at Melanie who had calmed down, and wore her dress.

“I have older brothers who learned to obey me. I don’t think I’ll have any trouble with sleeping beauty.” Heather studied Solomon from head to toe. “You pack quite a wallop. I’m surprised you didn’t kill him.”

“I would have, but Jo stopped me.” Solomon lowered his head, ashamed of his actions.

“Please take the boy with you. Caitlin and I’ll need to make a side trip.” Aunt Heather waited for the three to leave, then she dropped to her knees and placed her hands on either side of Jacob’s nose and straightened it.

I looked at Melanie asleep on the bed. How did Aunt Heather do that?

“Hand me my bag please, Caitlin.” My aunt’s voice startled me

I hurried to fetch her bag from the table and handed it to her.

She pulled a small towel out of it and handed it to me. “I need to clean his face. Please wet this thoroughly.”

I did as Aunt Heather asked, folded the dripping towel, and handed it back to her. Jacob started to wake up while she was cleaning the blood off his face. My aunt covered his eyes with her free hand and he quieted down.

I wonder how she does that.

Cricket whinnied, and I walked to the entrance to check on her. The travois was back in place. Nana left me, and I saw Melanie float toward my horse. I remember my father floating in the same manner.

Aunt Heather stood and crossed herself. “We better be going. He’ll be waking soon.”

I felt Nana Kennedy enter my body and noticed Melanie, fully covered, tied to the travois by her wrists and ankles. “Samuel didn’t want to take her. He said she wanted to stay.”

Aunt Heather mounted her mule. “She doesn’t know what she wants. I need a quiet place to work with her. Would you take us to your canyon?”

“Yes ma’am, I can.” I led the way with my aunt riding by my side.  Why would she want to go to Seth’s and my canyon? It’s far from peaceful. Three men have died there by my hands.
