Lesson One
Belonging to God

We will use scripture from the NIV bible to decide what God's word says about what we need to do and how we should live to have the promise of heaven. If you use another version that is ok, might be some words different but it will be the same message.

Luke 8:21
Jesus said to them all, "______ _________ ______ ___________ _____ those who hear the word of God and obey it."

Luke 12:8
"I assure you that those who __________ ___________ ________ ________ belong to me, the Son of Man will do the same for them before the angels of God

1John 1:9
But if we ___________ _______ ________ _______ _________, he will keep his promise and do what is right: he will forgive us our sins and purify us from all our wrongdoing.

Acts 5:31
God raised him to his right side as Leader and Savior, to give the people of Israel the opportunity ______ ___________ ________ _________ __________ _______ ______________.

Repent: NOUN
The action of repenting; sincere regret or remorse:
"each person who turns to God in genuine repentance and faith will be saved"
synonyms: remorse, contrition, contriteness, penitence, regret, ruefulness, remorsefulness, shame, guilt.

Repenting is much than being sorry you got caught, it is the most sincere want to change and never do those things ever again.

Acts 2:38
Peter said to them, "Each one of you must turn away from your sins and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sins will be forgiven; and you will receive God's gift, __________ __________ ____________.

How does the Bible say we receive the Holy Spirit?
Jesus Christ told His disciples that they would receive the Holy Spirit after His death. On the Day of Pentecost, the beginning of the Church of God was announced with powerful miracles, and Peter preached an inspired sermon describing how we can receive the Holy Spirit:

"Then Peter said to them, 'Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit'" (Acts 2:38).

Other passages show that the Spirit is usually given to the repentant believer after baptism when a minister lays his hands on the person and asks God to give the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:14-17).

Acts 8:14-17
The apostles in Jerusalem heard that the people of Samaria had received the word of God, so they sent Peter and John to them.15When they arrived, they prayed for the believers that they might receive the Holy Spirit.16For the Holy Spirit had not yet come down on any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.17Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

Repentance, belief, baptism and the laying on of hands are the steps God asks us to follow today before He gives His Holy Spirit, so if a person has not followed these steps, he or she does not have the Holy Spirit in him or her yet. ( I personally don't believe that laying on of hands is necessary because in Acts 2:38 there is no mention of laying on of hands. It was a different circumstance on the day of Pentecost, I believe the holy spirit comes from God and not from the power of any man.) I also do not condemn anyone that believes a preacher has to lay hands on to receive the holy spirit, Christ is the judge, and so he decides who is right or wrong, and maybe either way is alright also.

1John 4:16
And we ourselves know and believe the love which God has for us. God is love, ________ __________ ________ ________ _______ _________ live in union with God and God lives in union with them.

Rom 3:23
Everyone has sinned and is far away from God's saving presence.

We all have sinned, and even after we accept God, and belong to him we will still sin. We are human, and no one is perfect. The Godhead is the only perfect one. After we have done as these scriptures say, then we belong to God. God takes good care of his belongings, and when one of his belongings gets a dirty spot he wipes it clean when we in humility and love ask to be forgiven.

Being forgiven does not mean we should want to sin more because we can be forgiven, but that in time we grow in knowledge of God's word so we hopefully sin less, and therefore have to ask for forgiveness less. God forgives us because we obey his word, not just because we believe he is God.

I hope and pray that some will be helped from this bible study course. My intent will never be to divide people or argue Christianity. There are so many things in the bible that divide us. I believe we can have many different beliefs on certain things as long as it's not anything to do with salvation. By that I mean there are things God's word say we need to do to be saved, and there are some things that we can have different opinions on.
