Keeping Time

by poetwatch

I see my fingers twist
pushing the keys of my soul.
I wish they were straight
but time is something that I hold.
Like a dog clinging to a bone
Brittle Smile sees my stride
and laughs. He's singing my song
and keeping pace with me.
I resist his alluring temptations
to rest my head with my friends,
for where I walked, I saw his lots
taking those friends in body bags.
That was a long time before
they started walking with me.
I do not need his smile.
I'm not perfect, but I am free.
