A chapter in the book World As I See It 7

Becoming Invisible

by Barb Hensongispsaca

You look tired...
aged beyond your years.

You walk with the bend of life...
memories and regrets showing on your brow.

You walk on.

Time taking it's toll on your pace...
a limp unnoticed by most,
a wince as you climb the steps.
Pain etched in your face.

You walk on.

Invisible to others
in their hustle bustle around you,
shouldering their way ahead of you
without so much as an "excuse me".

You walk on.

Slow, as though you have born
the weight of the world
for many years.
The slump of your shoulders
unveiling your loneliness.

You walk on.

You stand aside
for someone younger
who seems late for his own funeral
and no time for you.

You walk on.

Accepting all of this
as your way of life
without a change in your expression.
What are you feeling?
Where do you hurt?

You walk on.

You approach her to buy
a cup of coffee.
She tells you to go sit down.
Instead of selling you a cup of coffee
she makes your coffee,
the way you want,
delivers it to you,
and says, "It's on me".

She was watching,
just like I was.

Your tired eyes meet mine
we exchange a smile.

You have made my day.

And I walk on.
