A childhood crush is remembered.

Her Name

by Thomas Bowling

Her Name

I can't remember her name or what she looked like. All I remember is she was my first crush in grade school. Every morning, she would walk to the front of the class and lead us in a stirring rendition of head, shoulders, knees, and toes. I treasured these shared moments. It was fifty years ago, but I still think about her.

She was the prettiest girl I had ever seen. To my young eyes, she was a vision of loveliness. I used to daydream that one day we would be married. If she noticed my infatuation, she never let it show. Surely, she must have known. Maybe, she was just being coy. Everyone else noticed. They used to tease me incessantly on the playground. Tommy loves . . . Darn, I wish I could remember her name.

The name doesn't matter. It wouldn't intensify my feelings for her if I could remember it. Still, it would help my daydreams if I knew what to call her. It's right on the tip of my tongue, but it fades away before I can say it.

After second grade, I still saw her from time to time, but only while passing in the hallway. Kids used to ask about her. Tom, do you still love . . . Darn, what's her name?

I have a trick that I use sometimes to help me remember names. I go through the alphabet letter by letter, thinking of names that begin with each letter. Agatha, Aleisha, Alice, Albatros . . . wait a minute, that's not a girls name. Maybe, the trick doesn't work anymore.

How could I have been so smitten by her and forget her name? Maybe it's a defense mechanism. It helps lessen the pain of never having her. I wish I could go back in time and tell her how I feel. Perhaps she felt the same, but we never told each other. I guess that can be my new daydream.

What was it they used to sing? I know! I remember her name. Tommy loves Mrs. McCurdy. Tommy loves Mrs. McCurdy. He's the teacher's pet.
