I'm Not a Monster Anymore

by Thomas Bowling

"I like being me. I'm a good person and everybody likes me."
I was looking in the mirror and reciting my morning mantra. It was something my shrink told me to do, and it worked. Every day I felt good about myself. I was glad that I had gotten the help I needed. Before, my life was a jumble of confusion. I was full of self-loathing and always felt that there was something wrong with me. Now I'm happy and confident.

I looked at my bloody hands. I pulled myself away from the mirror
and saw the dismembered body parts in my bathtub. I smiled. Everything was just as it should be.
