Snapshots of a past life

Stealing My Breath

by Deejharrington

I remember holding tightly to the banister,
crouched on the stairs,
no one sees me.
Watching terror on TV,
Bay of Pigs.

I remember dancing in place,
on the stairs,
with my sister and brothers,
waiting to dash to the wonders waiting
under the bright tree.
waiting for dad to ready the movie camera,
the tree of lights, blinding, smiling.

I remember waiting an eternity,
on the curb,
wanting to see my big brother,
home,
from the air force,

I remember listening,
in the dark, in my bed,
my sister asleep.
Hearing the phone ring, knowing
mom crying, dad consoling,
knowing grandpa was gone.

I remember called to the office, phone for me,
mom in Florida, crying.
feeling my knees hit the floor,
ambulance,
happened too quickly,
my dad is gone.

I remember hearing my son, "Mom?"
two words that tell me everything,
who?
Aunt Sue.
Can't believe, understand,
this isn't my reality.
my sister is gone.

Moments in life,
that steal your breath,
changing direction, world smaller,
having no choice but to inhale,
again.

There are too many times that the world stops spinning. You stop breathing. Your mind can't comprehend the reality of that moment. But you keep living, breathing, carrying on.
