Cosmic Drama

by Apostle Janos

"Twice the same sin is for no wise elf,
but shame on you if you fool me once.
History sure does repeat itself,
first as tragedy, then as a farce."

Those are the words the jester uttered,
suddenly, much to the king's disdain,
whose cup was dropped, the glass was shattered,
the shock too strong for him to contain.

"How dare you threaten me, you dumb fool!"
His mandate was no joking matter.
Kings publicly must defend their rule,
thus asked for his head on a platter.

The fool's plain speech was not threatening,
merely the oracle's open tongue.
He knew of the recent usurping,
how the usurper 'king' was a rogue.

These actions do always come around,
everyone will reap just what they sow.
To cosmic laws all men are kept bound;
he warned for the king's pride not to grow.

But prophets must suffer a cruel fate
by those who shoot the honest herald.
The schemers saw executed hate,
and waited for a king imperiled.

The court's applause, a scene well acted,
as the fool's head spinned, into a dance,
off his neck, the trickster repeated:
"first as tragedy, then as a farce."

Soon the opportune moment would come,
for another plotter aspirant,
as the king to madness will succumb,
be it a new saviour or tyrant.

In this contest we are challenged to write a poem that tells a story and also rhymes, with any rhyming scheme.

The photo shows Gipsoteca Canoviana by the architect Carlo Scarpa.

The jester's quote is Marx paraphrased (not a fan of Marx, but the quote is good): History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce
