A Blank Verse Sonnet

Ducks

by tfawcus

As light grows dim, my friend, I would disclose
a favoured spot of mine, beside a lake
with hidden depths to quench the dying flame,
so ducks may glide serenely through the stars,

in line astern across the firmament
when homeward bound, to nest amongst the sedge.
They come in pairs, complete with silhouettes,
each painted likeness mirrored upside down.

O, would that we could cast such shadows too!
Mine own is drab, composed of grayling shades,
of pen and ink. How can that capture light?
Yet as I muse, I ask - out loud it seems -

"Has life been good today?" They answer, "Quack,"
contentedly. There is no more to say.
