Vera enjoyed her work as an OT at the psychiatric hospital; a former pauper asylum dating back to the 19th century.
That afternoon, she let herself out of the locked ward and made her way down the long dark corridor towards the ladies. While in the cubicle, the ladies' room door creaked open. She flushed the toilet and opened the door. There was a short, dark haired man standing in the doorway. He was panting. His eyes were wild and terrifying. He pushed her back into the cubicle and began to put his hands all over her. Sweat was trickling down his face.
The terror was indescribable. She knew him. She struggled against the tears. He was going to kill her.   Something inside snapped. She let out a deafening scream that seemed to come from the depths of her soul. He froze momentarily as if in catatonic shock. She managed to push past him. In the corridor, no one was around. She ran to her ward almost slipping on the white tiles. With a shaking hand, she struggled to open the ward door. Hearing footsteps behind her, she turned. She saw the gleam in his eyes and the knife in his hand.

Writing Prompt
Write a short flash fiction story between 100 to 200 words based on the themes specified in contest details.

In the 1970's, I was taken on as an Occupational Therapist at Friern Barnet Psychiatric hospital in London. I had no O.T. qualifications but had just qualified as a teacher. They really needed people to help. The first part of this story is absolutely true. The part with the knife is fiction. I have called it Non-fiction but it does not apply to the whole story.
