Mom hard at work managing breakfast time

Old Time Family Breakfast

by HarryT

A long ago morning
Bacon frying in the pan
"Children," mother calls, "Set the table dears,
Don't drop the dishes," Mom warned,
Expect the unexpected when baby's in his chair, his
Food, we know, might come flying
Goodness knows from anywhere.
"Honey, please boil some water
Instant coffee is all we have today
Jam's on the table, toast is on the way. Who wants
Ketchup for their scrambled eggs? Darling,
Look and see if baby's eating his Maypo
Milk is in the ice box, warm it if he
Needs more.
Orange juice for Lucy, Mary and Bill
Pour it carefully, we need to get some more.
Quiet girls, stop the bickering. Bacon's
Ready, now I'll start the eggs, I know
Scrambled, not too soft. Bread is in the
Toaster just about to pop." Dear children
Unfold your napkins and place them on your laps, move the
Vase of flowers to the telephone table over by the
Wall." Little Lucy asks, "What about
Xavier?" "Don't worry the cat will get his food.
You all enjoy your meal and don't forget to
Zip your jackets before you leave for school."
