A Mystery Place Poem

Dare Not Go

by frogbook

Frightened souls milled about the cold outer room,
eyes full of anticipated terror, as if headed for the tomb.

Strange smells nudged the nostrils and permeated the air;
vile, acrid fumes, a past knowledge held there.

While heavy silence in the outer rooms reigned,
rude laughter, sharp, from the inner rooms came.

People didn't talk or inquire of one another,
faces downward, while waiting minds smothered.

The ones from inside took another unfortunate away,
while the others, their doom, awaited today.

And each one in the room shrank down in fear,
when the sound of that dentist's drill came to their ear.
