My hiding place from the world

My Refuge

by Cass Carlton

When I was a child, lost in dreams and fancies,
I had a hiding place where I could enter
And close the door and be at peace.
"They" used to mock and say things
Like "You're deaf and stupid too"
I never told of the place I had to hide in
When they and their world became ugly.
Gnome-like I'd sit in their squalor
While visions of beauty soap- bubbled past
They would smirk at my smiles of delight
"Look, she's grinning at nothing again."
And I'd smile even wider at their blindness
Pleased to leave them in ignorance
Than to share the magic of my dreams.
