Mother Was A Special Lady

by patcelaw

Mother was such a special lady
she cared for my brothers and me
we were born physically disabled
all four of us don't you see.

We were never able to go to school
never were we able to walk
and our voices halted badly
each time we would try to talk.

As we grew we could only crawl
if we tried to stand we'd fall
but mother was always there
to hear us when to her we'd call.

She never considered us a burden
she loved us each and every day
feeding and bathing us
and at night we'd hear her pray.

She'd pray that she would always
be a good and decent mother
one who loved her children, all four
me, Mary, and each of my brothers.

So if I could dress this dear lady
who cared for us even when old
I'd dress her loving, tired body
in beautiful silver and fine gold.

She is now in heaven with the Lord
and we have all joined her there
And I'm sure mom, you must have heard
"well done, for the hours you gave us care."

I wrote this in the voice of my cousin Mary, who was the disabled daughter of my aunt and uncle. I lived with their family for over 5 months, so I came to love this cousin. The faith of her and her brother were an inspiration to me and are part of the reason I wanted to become a Christian.
It was in their home that I met my husband Wayne.

This is a true story about my lovely aunt and her care of her four physically disabled children. They were disabled due to a genetic abnormality where my aunt and uncle were not related but their genes were so close, it was as though they were sister and brother.
The photo is of the mother and father of the disabled children who the two longest surviving children, as the two oldest brothers died in the late teens.
Those in the picture left to right are: my cousin Charles, my aunt Thelma, my cousin Mary and my uncle Cecil.
The condition these children had, was so rare that Duke university did an in depth study of their case, of which my family were required to fill out health reports. I do not know what the study revealed, but do hope it was something which could help other families in the future.
