Chicago- What went wrong?
stage
Act 1
Scene 4
Characters:
Congressman Adam Schapiro: 60 year old male; married father of three; Lawyer; Graduate of University of Chicago class of 81’. Political Party: Republican. He sits on various Congressional committees including Immigration and Education. Guest Speaker and friend of Professor McClain.
Professor Tom McClain: 55 year old male, Political Science instructor at the University of Chicago. Political Affiliation- Independent. Former Illinois State Representative 23rd. district. Friend of Congressman Schapiro.
Darlene Franklin: 23 year old black female, 3rd year student; major: Political Science: Democrat, from Chicago; activist
Setting: December 13, 2016 3pm; University of Chicago Lecture hall; course: Political Science 315. The room is packed with students and a few members of the faculty. Several students are recording with cell phones.
Congressman Schapiro sips from his water bottle as a young lady walks to the microphone in the center aisle.
Darlene: Hello, Congressman Schapiro. My name is Darlene; I’m a political science major. I was born and raised here in Chicago. I understand that you were too, on the north side. My question is this: Given the almost 800 murders in Chicago for 2016 and the craziness that is going on. Do you think Chicago is broken and if so what can be done?
Congressman: First off, Chicago isn’t broken. It’s fixed. Chicago is a perfect example of a completely shaped and crafted city by politicians, activists, and a population who all have the same ideological belief system.
Darlene (shifts from on foot to the other): Well… I don’t know about that. I am a Democrat and I…
Congressman: Oh, I didn’t say party. I said ideology. It’s just so happens that most Democrats are liberals, not all, but most. Every mayor, alderman, activist, and most of the population are liberal. The schools and even the universities are liberal ran.
Darlene: Liberals aren’t bad people and I reject…
Congressman (shakes his head): No, no, young lady. You’re misunderstanding me. I never said they were bad or evil people. (Takes a deep breath) I think it was General Patton who famously said, ‘If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn’t thinking.’
Young lady, the problem in Chicago is a direct result of monopolistic rule. Chicago has become homogeneous. It is such a Democratic and liberal stronghold that a Republican or a conservative wouldn’t dare run for office or raise his/her voice for fear of being stomped.
Darlene: How is that bad? And we have diversity in…
Congressman: Diverse in skin color and gender. But the people in Chicago all think the same. Look what happened at DePaul when a conservative was invited to speak on campus. He was threatened with arrest if he set foot on the property, and another gentleman, a gay conservative, had his talk broken up by Black Lives Matter activists. Do you know how hard it was for my friend here to get me in your school? Did you not see all the protesters outside? I’m an unarmed 60 year-old white guy with bad knees and there are three hundred people outside who think I am more dangerous than the anti-Christ.
Darlene: Well, I still don’t see how having all liberal or Democrat control created…
Congressman: If everyone agrees to look at a ship from the top. Who is going to see the hole in the bottom? Young lady, Chicago is a majority minority city, with an ideological belief that a minority is always the victim. Always oppressed and the justice system is rigged against the minority. Do you know what you get when minorities are committing 95% of the killings and crime in a liberal city?
Darlene: No.
Congressman (spreads his arms): Chicago… also known as: Detroit, LA, New York, Memphis, Houston, Compton, Camden or any other leading murder and crime ridden city in the country.
Darlene: So, you are saying liberals are bad or dumb?
Congressman: No, the same thing may not happen in a completely conservative or Republican controlled city, but another crisis certainly would. Liberals aren’t dumb but group think is. You need diversity of thought. You need to debate people with differing opinions. You need to test your policies and ideas against those who will try to poke holes in it. You need differing points of view.
Darlene: So, we need to elect some republicans or conservatives?
Congressman: No, it’s too late for that.
Darlene: Then what are we supposed to do?
Congressman (Sighs): Albert Einstein once said, “We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”
Darlene: What does that mean?
Congressman: It means, when you graduate… move to Montana. Next question.
Fade to Black.
