Beginnings

Beginnings

"I heard the bells on Christmas day--
their old familiar carols play."

pallor of death
now set at bay ...
but not away
another breath

the laborious compulsion
to not darken
future celebrations

"The angels sang through all the night
Until the rising sun,"

it's just today
the calendar
is not festooned
with garish stars

the day after is not the day
courteous death
Christmas cheer will remain

"It's this stillness we both love.
The love of form is a love of endings."

and now my dear
just you and I
my shell and yours
grief ... your relief

the Christmas angel 'top the tree
softly whispers ...
"you are just beginning."

Christmas Poetry contest entry

Recognized

An odd thing how important it is that one does not die ON a special holiday. Christmas is perhaps at the top of the list. Even the poor dying soul will attempt to make it through Christmas so as not to forever taint the day for their loved ones. I've known folk in the medical field who tell stories of extraordinary measures taken to get an individual to 12-26 to avoid a Christmas death. That isn't all this piece is about, but it is what set my mind in motion.

Poetry Potlatch ***TOPIC*** 12-17

Chose one, two or all three of these famous quotes and write a Saphonnic triad or a suite of Saphonnic triads. YES, you may submit TWO separate entries. These are inspiring. :))

"I heard the bells on Christmas day
Their old familiar carols play," --- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

"The angels sang through all the night
Until the rising sun," --- Sara Teasdale

"It's this stillness we both love.
The love of form is a love of endings." --- Louise Gluck

This week we will be continuing with The Sapphonic Triad. It's just toooooo cool and you guys are coming up with amazing pieces. And I'm too lazy to change it at the end of the year. LOL!!

This form is an invention of our own Cliverde (Carol) and named by Pantygynt (Jim).

The form is as follows:

A two-line quotation (Free verse but max total of sixteen syllables - must be concise and memorable) followed by a quatrain, four lines each of four syllables finally an 8-4-6 syllable envoi that moves us on somewhere...it should have a "satori" feeling.

You can use rhyme if you want, or not. :))
No meter requirement.
