A Sister on the Way

by Connie C

My mama's stomach still looks flat
though she complains she's getting fat.
She rubs her tummy 'cause that's where
a tiny baby grows in there.

My parents shared the news today.
A little sister's on the way.
They told me I would have to learn
to share my toys and take my turn.

Although a brother would be nice,
I guess a sister will suffice.
I just hope that it comes to be
they don't forget 'bout little me.

These days, you see, I'm center stage.
I bring delight at my young age.
But now the stage I'll have to share
with someone else; it's only fair.

I guess, for now, I'll just enjoy
the fact I am their only boy.
And when my sister comes along,
I'll greet her with a hug and song.

Our daughter announced recently that we will have a second grandchild this coming spring--a granddaughter. So far, our grandson Jack seems to be receptive to the idea. I can still recall, at age 3 and a half, being very jealous of my younger brother when he was born.
