I Can Dress Myself

by Marykelly

"It's time for school. It's time to get dressed."
Mother's voice comes up the stairs, down the hall, in my room.
"It's time for school. It's time to get dressed."
I can dress myself. I am five years old. I go to kindergarten. Mother already told me what to wear today. Mother said to tell her if I have any problems. No problems, I can dress myself.

Mother said to wear my blue jeans. Mother said to wear my red shirt with Superman on the front. No problem, no problem at all.

Where are my blue jeans? Uh oh, where did they go? They aren't on my bed. They aren't under my bed. They aren't in my closet. Uh oh, where did they go?
Here are my blue shorts. They aren't my blue jeans but they are blue. That's it! I'll wear my blue shorts. No problem, no problem at all.

Mother said to wear my red shirt with Superman on the front. Where is my red shirt with Superman on the front? Uh oh, where did it go. It isn't on my bed. It isn't under my bed. It isn't in my closet. Uh oh, where did it go? Here are my Superman pajamas. My Superman pajamas are red. My pajama top looks like a shirt. That's it! I'll wear my superman pajama top. No problem, no problem at all.

Mother said to wear my red socks. Mother said to wear my new tennis shoes. No problem, no problem at all. Where are my red socks? Uh oh, where did they go? They aren't on my bed. They aren't under my bed. They aren't in my closet. Here is one red sock. Here is one blue sock. The blue sock matches my blue shorts. The red sock matches my Superman pajamas.
That's it! I'll wear one red sock and one blue sock. No problem, no problem at all.

Mother said to wear my new tennis shoes. Where are my new tennis shoes? Uh oh, where did they go? They aren't on my bed. They aren't under my bed. They aren't in my closet. Uh oh, where did they go? Here is one new tennis shoe. Where is the other? Uh oh, Where did it go? Here is one old tennis shoe. Where is the other? Uh oh, where did it go? Here is one old tennis shoe. Here is one new tennis shoe. They are both tennis shoes. That's it! I'll wear one old tennis shoe. I'll wear one new tennis shoe. No problem, no problem at all.

Now I am dressed for school. Let me look in the mirror.
That's it! I am wearing everything Mother said to wear.

Mother's voice comes up the stairs, down the hall, in my room.
"It's time for school. Are you dressed for School? Any problems?"

I am dressed for school. No problem, no problem at all.

Children's Story contest entry

This is a predictable book for the pre reader or very early reader. The characteristic that defines the picture book is the repetition of words or phrases. The plot line is also very repetitious. The repetition invites the early reader to predict the words and actions and participate when the story is read aloud.
Pays one point and 2 member cents.
