The importance of freedom
Prisoner
by Heather Knight
The Prisoner Contest Winner
I shouldn't be here. I don't deserve it. I look through the bars and see freedom. I see where I want to be.
My life's a series of never-ending days. A chain of boredom tied around my neck.
Fantasies of fleeing fill my mind. What if I could get out? What would I do then? Where would I go? These visions are intoxicating. They're my only reason to live.
And then one day, my dream comes true. The little one has left the door open by accident.
I fly away into the sky...
'Mum! Mum! The canary has escaped!'
