Ghost

by Thomas Bowling

Lenny was surfing the net. "Hey, Theresa, there's a guy who says he can prove ghosts don't exist."

"You don't believe in ghosts do you?"

"No, but I don't think you can prove they don't exist. How are you going to prove something doesn't exist, that you don't believe exists?"

"Whaaaat?" Theresa asked.

An hour later, Lenny was still searching the web. "Are you still researching that ghost thing?" Theresa asked.

"Yeah, now, I'm intrigued. The guy makes a lot of sense. He says ghost stories go back thousands of years. Most ancient religions started out as ghost fables told around the fire."

"Come on Ghostbuster," Theresa said. "Time to go to bed."

In the morning Lenny was still glued to the computer. "Didn't you come to bed at all last night?" Theresa asked.

"No, this is fascinating. He says most ghost sightings can be easily disproved. The blurry images that people see in pictures are really caused by light leaks in the camera body. They can be duplicated with old cameras."

"What about those TV shows where they investigate ghost sightings, haunted restaurants and so forth. What about things that go bump in the night?"

"Cats."

"Really, a thousand years of cats running into walls."

"Do you have a better explanation?"

Lenny went back to his computer.

Theresa walked over and pressed the OFF button. "You need to get some sleep before you turn into a ghost." Lenny went to bed, but he thought of ghosts. When he came out of the bedroom, he pretended he had slept. "How long was I down for?"

"Twelve minutes."

"I was thinking if ghosts did exist, what would they be like? Would it be like that Bruce Willis movie? They don't know they're ghosts, or would they know they're ghosts, but people who saw them wouldn't know?"

"Why can't we just have a normal conversation today?"

"I don't get it. Why doesn't this interest you?"

"Don't you remember?"

"Remember what?

"That I died four years ago."

Lenny thought hard. He remembered.
