Guilt

by mfowler

Your photo peers out from its tattered frame;
eyes proud, dress suit prepared with mother's care.
Why do we struggle so ... to say your name?

Our soldier, long the battle was your game.
Your courage true, you went where no-one dare.
Your photo peers out from its tattered frame.

In death, we see your face but feel your shame.
Oh, babe, it's hard to find a tear to spare.
Why do we struggle so ... to say your name?

Newspapers, quick to judge and lay the blame.
Your cowardice is all now ours to bear.
Your photo peers out from its tattered frame.

Last time at home we knew you weren't the same:
the dreams, the shakes, that empty friendless stare.
Why do we struggle so ... to say your name?

There's more to life than cheers and public fame.
You're in our hearts--included in our prayer.
Your photo peers out from its tattered frame.
Why do we struggle so ... to say your name?
