Impressions from my time in Bulgaria

Reflections of Bulgaria

by Cynthia1

As I rode out across the way
I marveled at Bulgaria today.
The country was a bright surprise-
impressions linger in my eyes

Red poppies scattered on the hill
gay roses bloomed-I see them still
The oaken plow- a lasting treasure
though progress loomed in fullest measure

The monasteries standing proud
were sending spirals to the clouds.
What secrets they have kept through tears
what treasures they've preserved for years

Oh lovely arms stretched open wide
with loaves of bread tucked deep inside
you greet each guest in your bright land
with tokens friends can understand

The camaraderie at dinner hour
the table strewn with food and flower
The lilting laughter hiding fears
the dancing feet that wipe out tears

The music, art-gentility
expressions of a spirit free
You did not let oppression sever
your loving heart- you kept it ever

I've walked with you and held your hand
You've welcomed me to your sweet land.
Forever I will think of you-
Oh gracious place that I once knew

I visited Bulgaria on three different occasions when I was part of a leadership partnership between universities in the U.S. and Bulgaria. I have many wonderful impression of that country based on my visits there.
