My Favorite Teacher

by michaelcahill

The wool went with me everywhere
a handy tool indeed
I’d cover eyes without a care
to cover every need

to say that I was full of it
was understating truth
full to the brim (it rhymes with spit)
from Boston to Deluth

But, Mr. Ward saw through me
my loads of crap ignored
I’d speak, he’d say, “Yeah, phooey,
you’ll learn now”, he implored!

I got a D in English comp
this master of the word
he denied my normal romp
“You earned it, you glib turd”.

I learned to learn for real from him
I never thanked him proper
My college days were filled with vim
I no longer was a flopper.

Write any kind of poem thanking someone. Perhaps a former teacher, the building super, a relative or friend. Reach back in your memory and find someone whose influence in your life is appreciated only now. Or just says thanks to your mom. Anything is fine. :)
