The Days When He Was A Kid

by bob cullen

The Days When He Was A Kid

The old gate's hanging open
Just like it always did
The clothesline's sagging unloved
Memories are struggling to stay alive
The days when he was a kid

The cows are long gone
As is the tree where we hid
The smokes and the food
That he stole from the fridge
The days when he was a kid

Off to Nanna's and Pa's
Every second weekend
Two hours cramped in a car
The radio's playing songs from back when
The days when he was a kid

She opened the door
Let yesterday in
Saw what it did on his face
The smile takes him home to
The days when he was a kid

Now yesterday's faded
The friends are all gone
He's all alone in his room
Retreats to a place he feels safe
The days when he was a kid

I don't know where this came from. I just woke up with the first three lines rebounding in my head.
I'm not even sure it's poetry. It has no rhyme, no meter and no real shape.
Hope you enjoy it.
