The Final Word

by tfawcus

I searched the lexicon last night
to find the final word,
definitive, beyond dispute,
but 'zygote' was absurd.

The fusion of two cells or souls
defines the start of life.
It's only fission marks the end,
when atoms split in strife.

Then in another tome I found
my bank of words extended.
The zygote now gave up its claim
to be the word that ended.

It was, instead, a Zyrian.
He echoed wolves of old,
whose host destroyed Sennacharib
in cohorts, gleaming gold.

Imagine, though, a man of peace,
if that's not too absurd,
unprejudiced, espousing love...
a finer final word!

The theme of the 2016 Central Coast Writers Contest was The Final Word. However, I missed the deadline! Here it is, anyway.

"The Destruction of Sennacherib" is a poem by Lord Byron, first published in 1815, that starts with the lines:
"The Assyrian came down like the wolf on the fold,
And his cohorts were gleaming in purple and gold;"
