A chapter in the book My Life As I See It

Early Morning Kayaking

by BeasPeas

Gentle waves sway the kayak.
I stand next to it at the shoreline,
ankle deep in cool water.

My camera dangles handily from my neck,
ready for the perfect shot.
It interferes with the bulky life preserver,
a necessary nuisance.
I adjust my wide-brimmed straw hat,
a Goodwill find,
that will protect against strong sun.

Anticipation heightens senses.
Air is fresh, aromatic,
a rich blend of earth and pond.

Dew glistens on the grassy riverbank.

Careful to maintain balance,
I climb in, stretching out my legs, settling down.

Now I'm ready!

This is only my second time out;
proud of my success so far,
I push off from the shallows.

Paddle dips.
Rhythmic.
First one side, then the other.
It creates whirlpools around itself.

I finesse the kayak into the waterlilies
where it glides effortlessly.
Delicate pink and white blossoms float.
A frog croaks, another answers.
Dragonflies dip and skim.
I give thanks for the beauty, the quiet,
and take a photo from the bow.
