Part Four

Thursday's Child

by Janet Foor

When Thursday's child turned sweet sixteen
In June of 'fifty five
Her youthful body all grown up
She thought she had arrived.

It happened on a sultry night
While walking home alone
A man she knew gave her a ride
Of course, she should have known.

Before she realized her fate
Before a sound was made
Before the fear choked in her throat
She knew she'd been betrayed.

When she arrived back home that night
With bruises on her cheek
Her momma saw her tattered dress
But neither one could speak.

This man who stole her priceless gift
And robbed her of her pride
Would never pay for his great sin
With arrogance, he lied.

The season passed for Thursday's child
Her innocence now gone
The life she knew was marked with shame
Cruel fate her Babylon.

Recognized

In 1955, some young girls felt shame and embarrassment as if the rape was their fault. Some even were literally exiled from society, e.g., like the Jews being exiled to Babylon.
