Works of Mercy

by Marykelly

Mercy is more than forgiveness, it' s love.
It's part of God's greatest gift from above.
Mercy flows from that special love God gives
and brings peace and happiness to the way we live.

Mercy's corporal and spiritual works point the way
to how we should treat one another each day.
These works don't require big things at all,
in fact, they teach us the importance of small.

Myrna keeps a bag of food in her car,
she finds someone who needs it without going far.
Cups of water don't seem like much,
Bernie passes them out where he helps to serve lunch.

Tara collected and sorted bags of clothes
to share with a family she hardly knows.
When Grandmother went to the nursing home
Theresa and Rita never left her alone.

Lorna went on mission trip for two weeks,
and helped repair houses with roofs that leaked.
Kirsten chose nursing for her career,
she tends to her patients through pain and tears.

Cathy flew to the funeral when Joanie died,
during the service she quietly cried.
Ken shared his faith with a Confirmation class,
he hopes learning their faith is a practice that lasts.

Mr. Wright is principal of St. Francis Xavier School,
his advice is work hard, respect the rules.
When Alice was so sick and Gene so sad,
his family and friends gave them all that they had.

Greg volunteers to help students read,
he's patient and kind and listens to their needs.
Mary Murphy immigrated from Ireland alone,
she forgave all the reasons that cost her her home.

At Planned Parenthood, Mary Ann stands in place
and prays to change minds through God's holy grace.
Missy bows her head and prays for all souls,
the living the dead, the young and the old.

These people are simple, not famous at all,
they're important because they answer God's call.
Through these Works of Mercy they show love in action,
their reward is God's blessing and true satisfaction.

Recognized

Pope Francis has declared this year the Year of Mercy. Included in the teachings of the Catholic Church are the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. There are seven of each . The Corporal Works of Mercy are: feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, visit the imprisoned, shelter the homeless, care for the sick, bury the dead. The Spiritual Works of Mercy are: share knowledge with others, give advice to those who need it, comfort those who suffer, be patient with others, forgive those who injure you, give correction to those who need it, pray for the living and the dead.
This poem is based on these Works of Mercy.
