Free Verse - What makes a hero?

Heroes

by Delahay

Heroes don't fight for something to prove
They are just humans like me or you
They feel pain and fear, and hunger too
They're just people with so much to lose
Forget who they are for what they must do

A hero can't be made or taught
An inner strength which can't be bought
They do what's right at any cost
When it seems that all is lost
A line somewhere that must be crossed

A general stood upon a pier
As troops unloaded with their gear
They heard him grumble loud and clear
"Heroes front and center" as a jeer
Not one man did move near
A lone voice said "None reporting here"
