when myth becomes reality
She came to me in memory from times
beyond my circumstance and understanding.
She called in tangled tones like crystal chimes
awash in waves perpetually expanding.
At first cacophony diminished sleep
and restless thought abraded concentration.
In time the sound pulsated somewhere deep
and captivated my imagination.
In psychedelic dream I saw her being.
Her countenance aglow in coloured light.
About her, iridescent waves were fleeing.
Her hair spread out - a trail of beaded light.
Her voice, like gentle surf upon the beach
reached out to me in language vacillating.
Although her words appeared as ancient speech,
one word I knew; she kept reiterating.
Atlantis, fabled vanished world beyond
belief; that kingdom under churlish sea.
Unable to believe nor to respond,
why did this crazy dream so bother me?
The liner's horn blew loud and broke my dreams.
The captain called on passengers to gather.
As panic spread, I heard the people's screams.
The ocean writhed and whipped in stormy lather.
The ship stood up and slid beneath the waves.
Some made the boats and rowed away to shore.
The rest, consigned to death and wat'ry graves
We drifted down, now lost, to ocean's floor.
Somehow, a calm encroached my dying mind.
That voice, now reassured and guided me.
Her sparkling face like beacon to the blind
led me to life anew below the sea.
