The Ending Emote

by Fleedleflump

The end is not the end,
or so I thought to say.
Departures are beginnings
to send us on our way.

But then I got to thinking
about what endings are,
about the beauty locked inside -
far nearer than afar.

An ending is a chance
to look back over time
at rivers we have crossed
and mountains we have climbed.

A memory is potent -
the first note of a score,
evoking ten for every one
emotion held in store.

It blossoms from a moment
and blooms into a scene,
reminding us of laughs and loves
and all that lies between.

It brings to life a story
and tells it with a twist,
of people and of places known,
so they will not be missed.

These are the gifts we're left with
from those we leave behind,
the nuggets carried with us,
forever to remind.

For Dad, I'll always smile -
his humour was a charm,
of silly rhymes and funny faces,
chaotic and calm.

For him, this is an ending,
for us, that opening note.
And for my Dad, this little rhyme -

to think, and to emote.

I will be reading this at my Dad's funeral in a few days' time. My Mum asked me to write something, and this is the result. He died suddenly a little over a week ago, at the very beginning of a battle with cancer. He was 67.

Those who know my poetry will see this as a simpler, more accessible style than I usually employ. That is my hope, at least :-/.

Thank you for reading.
