The One That Got Away

by Delahay

I was on my way to nowhere
Or maybe coming back
You could hear the Zippo close
With an attention-getting snap
The tapping of her nails
On the formica bar nonstop
She had everyone's gaze
From the bottom to the top
I wished she was in distress some way
That she could look to me for a save
But in my head a voice did say
She's the one that gets away

She was wearing a red dress
Someone had the pleasure to sew on
I didn't want to close my eyes in case
When they opened she'd be gone
Her hair flowed out like root beer
She had body work by fisher
Purred like a kitten taking a nap
But she was a full grown cat
I was waiting to talk to her but
I couldn't think of what to say
It was in my mind that this one
Is the one that would get away

Through the smokey haze of cigarettes
She was one hot babe I must confess
She sucked me in with one long breath
The thoughts she brought promised a blast
But things like this never do last
The best thing to do is to let it pass
Light a fire for a man, he is warm all night
Or set him on fire and he is warm for life
I hoped this would work out right
Then it would be worth the fight
She had a smile that made me pray
She would not be the one that got away

I don't know who swung first
No doubt someone threw some dirt
But I know it must have hurt
The chaos did the rest of the work
Pool cues, glasses, flew through the air
Followed soon by stools and chairs
Where they landed no one cared
The best place to be wasn't there
It seems my luck was still the same
But there was no one else to blame
I dreaded the words I had to say
She was the one that got away

I remember seeing "Body by Fisher" on cars for many years. I haven't seen it for some time and it may not make sense to people outside the U.S. so I thought I should put an explanation for the phrase. This is from Wikipedea.

Fisher Body is an automobile coachbuilder founded by the Fisher brothers in 1908 in Detroit, Michigan; it was a division of General Motors for many years, but in the 1980's it was slowly phased out as a stand-alone brand and was merged into the other General Motors divisions such as Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac, etc. Today it is now known as Fisher & Company. The name was well known to the public, as General Motors vehicles displayed a "Body by Fisher" emblem on their door sill plates until the mid-1990s.
