The Last Unicorn's Gift

In a far-distant field full of barley and corn
Dwelt a beast with a magical, musical horn.
'Twas Tilly the Unicorn, last of her tribe,
More wondrous than humdrum old words can describe.

For her coat was a mingling of silver and cream
And her mane a luxuriant, mystical dream.
Her horn a great spiral of opal and pearl
Sprang out from her forehead, bedecked with a curl.

And the elves, oh the elves, what a comical crew,
Took a hold of that horn and they blew and they blew.
Starting out as a whisper, then stirring and loud,
There swelled a great symphony, poignant and proud.

The thrum of percussion, the swoon of the strings,
With woodwinds' sweet melody, Hark! How it sings!
The marriage of clarinet, oboe and flute,
The call of the horns and the trumpets' salute.

It poured down the hillside, a river of sound
That rushed down the valley, 'tween hills all around.
Past farmlets where cattle and sheep stood and grazed,
And hamlets where village-folk all were amazed.

'Cross prairies and deserts and mountains it flew,
Through great city streets to the Outer Barcoo.
Wherever a living soul laid down his head,
This torrent of beautiful harmony spread.

And to each one who heard it, a change then occurred,
So that brother called brother, said, "Hey, have you heard?"
Then soldiers cried out, "What are we fighting for?"
And they laid down their terrible weapons of war.

All conflict was ended, all tumult, all strife,
As neighbour hugged neighbour and husband kissed wife.
Far away on her hillside, midst barley and corn
Came a smile to the face of the last unicorn.
