The women hatch a plan to fight back.

A chapter in the book British Women

The Enemy Within.

by Tomes Johnston

Amanda and her daughter are British prisoners in a European Prisoner of war camp. Amanda is an old flame of the Commandant and says that he is Samantha's father. Commandant Koch's men want to rape Samantha, while Koch is trying to protect her.

VAN DAMME:
(ADDRESSING THE AUDIENCE AS LIGHTS COME UP ON AMANDA AND SAMANTHA).
Now you see Koch’s dilemma. The enemy isn’t just another flawed human being. The enemy are evil terrorists and we are the force for good in this battle, but Koch was starting to have his doubts.

(AMANDA AND SMANTHA WALK AWAY).

AMANDA:
So you made him coffee?

SAMANTHA:
Yes, Mother. He drinks too much of it, but at least it isn’t alcohol. I made him lunch afterwards. You seem very interested in it all.

AMANDA:
Thank God you are there. He will look after you.

SAMANTHA:
I would rather if he let us go.

AMANDA:
Don’t make him mad.

SAMANTHA:
I tried my best to get him angry. I hate him. He probably killed Dad and Victor.

AMANDA AND FEMALE CHORUS:
Don’t say that. We don’t know that they are dead.

AMANDA:
They’ll be fine. I know they will. I asked Koch if he could find out about them.

SAMANTHA:
He said he would?

AMANDA:
Yes.

SAMANTHA:
Why do you trust him? Why did you ask him to take me into his quarters? What makes you think he’s better than the rest of them? He stared at me the whole time I was there. He makes my skin crawl.

(JANE ENTERS WITH PLASTIC BOTTLES OF WATER).

JANE:
Here, take some water.

AMANDA:
How are you, Jane?

JANE:
How do you think I am after burying a young girl?

SAMANTHA:
Here.
(SHE HANDS JANE SOME BREAD).
Take it. You’ll need to keep your strength up.

JANE:
Bread?

JANE AND FEMALE CHORUS:
Stale bread.

AMANDA:
It’s fresh. Koch gave it to her.

JANE:
Fresh bread.

SAMANTHA:
He made me take it. I won’t touch his bread.

JANE:
We heard he took you in. You could be of great use to us in there.

SAMANTHA:
What do you mean?

JANE:
What do I mean? You are in the viper’s lair itself. When he heals he will be sent to butcher another town or village somewhere. We need to know where he is going to be sent.

AMANDA:
No way, Jane. She isn’t getting into this. What good could this information do?

JANE AND FEMALE CHORUS:
What good could it do?

JANE:
I’m going to pick up where poor Diana left off.

AMANDA:
How do you plan to get that information out of here?

JANE:
I’ll escape.

AMANDA:
Just like Diana?

JANE:
No, I’ll succeed. I’ll have to.

AMANDA:
How do you get past the guards?

JANE:
I have my ways. Don’t ask and I’ll tell you no lies.

AMANDA:
She isn’t getting involved in this. We just want to get out of here.

JANE:
And she just happened to be in the same place as that patrol.

SAMANTHA:
I wouldn’t have done that if I knew it would lead to this.

JANE AND FEMALE CHORUS:
You did a very patriotic thing.

JANE:
You don’t want to be involved? The day that we entered the European Union we were all involved. When your husband and son joined the resistance we were involved. When your daughter attacked that patrol with the others, we were all involved. Just look around you. We are all in this together.

SAMANTHA:
All right. If I hear anything important, I’ll pass it on to you.

AMANDA:
Samantha…

SAMANTHA:
It’s the least I can do.

JANE:
For the memory of poor Diana, Amanda. Samantha knows that even in here we can strike a blow at the heart of the enemy. We can fight them from within. The more soldiers we keep busy here, the less there will be to terrorise the people.

JANE:
They can take our bodies, Amanda, but they can never taint our souls.
