Koch and Samantha talk about her position.

A chapter in the book British Women

Tricky Negotiations.

by Tomes Johnston

Amanda and her daughter are British prisoners in a European Prisoner of war camp. Amanda is an old flame of the Commandant and says that he is Samantha's father. Commandant Koch's men want to rape Samantha, while Koch is trying to protect her.

Act 2

VAN DAMME:
(ADDRESSING THE AUDIENCE).
We thought that the Commandant had an eye on the beautiful young girl.

(LIGHTS COME UP ON KOCH PUTTING ON HIS UNIFORM).

VAN DAMME CONT:
The men were grumbling that he had taken her out of their grasp. Koch didn’t need them to curse him. He had been clear and resolute about his duty up to this point, but it wasn’t so clear anymore. He had to come to terms with the fact that his own daughter was the enemy. That was playing on his mind now.

(KOCH PUTS HIS HEAVILY DECORATED JACKET ON AND SAMANTHA ENTERS. FOR THE FIRST TIME, SHE IS CLEAN, HER HAIR IS BRUSHED AND SHE HAS A CLEAN DRESS ON).

VAN DAMME CONT:
Commandant…

KOCH:
Yes, of course… Samantha James, I believe. You look better, but you still look tired.

(SAMANTHA STAYS SILENT).

KOCH CONT:
Aren’t you getting enough sleep?

SAMANTHA:
How can I sleep in this place?

KOCH:
You must sleep. You have to keep your strength up. Let me show you around the place.

SAMANTHA AND FEMALE CHORUS:
Why am I here?

KOCH:
You are here to do some housekeeping. The kitchen is in there and I need some coffee. I take it NATO style… Oh, forgive me. That’s white with two sugars.
(PAUSE).
Didn’t Lieutenant Van Damme tell you why you were here?

SAMANTHA:
That’s not what I meant… What I meant was why me?
(PAUSE).
Well?
(PAUSE).
Because you went to university with my mother a million years ago?

SAMANTHA AND FEMALE CHORUS:
Or does the Commandant want me for himself?

KOCH AND MALE CHORUS:
What makes you think I’m such an animal?

SAMANTHA:
That’s the way things are here.

SAMANTHA AND FEMALE CHORUS:
Rape and threats.

KOCH:
He threatened you too?

SAMANTHA:
You hardly think that I volunteered to come here to make…

SAMANTHA AND FEMALE CHORUS:
…the butcher of my people…

SAMANTHA:
…some coffee, do you?

KOCH:
Your mother asked me to take you in.

SAMANTHA:
She asked?

KOCH:
She asked me to keep you safe… I have daughters myself, so believe me, you will be safe here.

SAMANTHA:
How can I be safe with a butcher like you?

KOCH:
I am a soldier.

SAMANTHA:
It was soldiers who shot Diana. She was only seventeen.

KOCH:
In a camp like this…

SAMANTHA AND FEMALE CHORUS:
A prison camp.

KOCH:
In a prison camp like this in a time of war attempted escape is a capital offence. She knew the chance she was taking. She knew the rules. We must do everything we can to stop these terrorists.

SAMANTHA AND FEMALE CHORUS:
Freedom fighters.

KOCH AND MALE CHORUS:
Terrorists.

SAMANTHA:
And you have no qualms about shooting a teenage girl.

KOCH:
I told you. She knew the rules.

KOCH AND MALE CHORUS:
Terrorists come in all guises.

KOCH:
During the fighting in Essex, where I got my wounds, some of the enemy were young boys. We still had to fight against them and kill them.

SAMANTHA:
My father and brother fought in Essex.

KOCH:
They might have fought my men. They might have wounded me.

SAMANTHA AND FEMALE CHORUS:
And you fought and killed them.

SAMANTHA:
And here I am, just about to make you a white coffee with two sugars…

SAMANTHA AND FEMALE CHORUS:
NATO style.

(SAMANTHA EXITS. KOCH SITS IN HIS WHEELCHAIR. THE LIGHTS FADE TO MUSIC).
