My Pauper Son

by Sandra Stoner-Mitchell

~*~*~*~

I plucked the rose and held it to my heart,
Then walked towards the ocean wretchedly.
When first she held his hand it was the start
Of their true love that wasn't meant to be.

She was the daughter of a nobleman,
And he a pauper's son, my only child.
They hid their love as only lovers can,
But fortune on such love so rarely smiled.

One evening in the moonlight by the shore,
The couple stopped and shared a tender kiss.
I heard that once they'd pledged forever more
They'd be as one on such a night as this.

I stopped and threw my rose into the sea,
My son with his true love would always be.
