Charlotte's Traveling Quilt

by rosehill (Wendy)

Hello, I'm Charlotte's traveling quilt
where life unfolds and dreams are spilt
by Teddy Bears who've come to tea
and sandy shovels by the sea.

A quilt whose squares will soon be stuffed
with tales of piggies huffed and puffed,
Snow White and Dumbo's feathered flights,
a campfire's glow on starlit nights.

Whose wish-upon-a-starfish hopes
don't fade with time or laundry soaps
(Stitches formed from girlhood giggles,
wrinkled, worn from tickley-wiggles).

The perfect spot to snuggle-bug,
play peek-a-boo, Aladdin's rug
will fly where Charlotte's smiles command;
Toad Hall, or Never-Never-Land.

And as the tale of Charlotte grows
I hope, by traveling, each year shows
great spots of joy, huge happy stains
where childhood's memory remains.

My sister made a beautiful baby quilt with starfish and sand dollars, ribbons of pink and fuschia patterns for a friend's new baby, Charlotte. She called me, afraid that the quilt would be considered too pretty to use and would end up protected on a shelf or hanging instead of becoming an integral part of the little one's everyday adventures. She wanted it used when Charlotte's parents took her camping or to the seashore. She asked me to write a poem to accompany the quilt that gently instructed the mother on its use. This is the result.- Wendy
