How Phyllis met her penguins

Another Phyllis Faux Pas

by Sandra Stoner-Mitchell

"Hey, Petey," Penny whispered. "What strength pills is Phyllis on?
She's organized a contest, but I think she's got it wrong!"
As Petey looked at Penny's face, he closed his eyes and sighed.
"Oh, not another Phyllis Faux pas?!" Petey almost cried!

"She wants the world to know just how she came to meet us all."
Poor Penny tried to stop the laughter as her mind recalled.
"Has she gone mad?" Petey exclaimed, "I'm sure if I were her
I wouldn't want the world to know just how it did occur!

"I can remember clearly, it's a scene I'll not forget,"
Then Petey stopped and giggled at the way they all had met,
And Penny laughed so loudly that their parents came to see,
If what their kids found funny, they could share their revelry?

"I still remember very well, that day last year in Spring.
Said Papa, smiling merrily, "'Twas such a funny thing."
"When I saw Phyllis on the ice, just sat on her behind,
With Paddy Polar Bear right there...I thought he was unkind."

Then Mama Penguin, laughed as well "He really did have fun,
Poor Phyllis tried to run away and slipped up on her bum."
"And when she tried to stand again," said Petey with a grin,
"Dear Paddy tried to help her with his paws under her chin!"

"Then, when she saw us standing near, she called out, 'could we come
And save her from the hungry bear?' said Penny, to her mum,
"And you said we would save her, but she'd have to pay the price,
She'd have to feed us fish each day, and say our songs are nice!"

Mama grinned mischievously, "I thought she needn't know,
That Paddy was a softy, and he loved to make a show.
Well, Phyllis gawped and stuttered, then she asked us all to sing,
So we sang our greatest hit song, 'The Wind Beneath our Wings.'

Then Papa and dear Paddy, set about to have a fight,
And Paddy growled and roared his roar, much to our delight.
But Papa jumped on Paddy's back and knocked him to the floor,
And that's when we grabbed Phyllis, pushing her right through our door."

Petey then took up the tale, "She called Papa a hero,
And she signed our contract, though her payment would be zero.
Now we have fresh fish for tea no matter where we go,
And Phyllis is still happy, and evermore will be so!"

"So what about this contest? Should we warn her she is wrong?"
Penny asked her family, "Should we let her carry on?"
All the penguins shrugged their shoulders, then with a little grin,
Petey said, "It would be funny, lets watch the fun begin!"

How did Phyllis meet her penguins? writing prompt entry
Writing Prompt
This is for those of you familiar with my singing penguin family. People have asked how I met them, and I won't tell. But YOU can.

Write a story about how and where I met the penguin family that sings here for holidays. To see Papa, Mama, Petey, and Penny, just look in Phyllis's portfolio under BOOKS --> SINGING PENGUINS for examples.

The story may be in prose or in the form of a long poem. Stories in poetry must have a minimum of 20 lines. There is no maximum or minimum for prose stories.

Have fun! And no fair asking a penguin. They've all been told they'll get an extra mackerel for turning in cheaters. :)
