A long Journey for Two Friends

The Camel and the Dove

by LoannaLois

"Where are we going?" asked the dove," my wings are feeling weak."
then camel said," Don't worry, we'll be fine.
We'll rest ahead then try to find, respite from our travel,
and concentrate on looking for the sign."

"I wonder if our plan was maybe foolish and naive...
I mean, are camels' dreams dependable?
I know your vision of a king seemed wondrous at the time,
but, is one wounded dove expendable?"

"Don't worry, little faithless one, I'm crippled now and bruised.
but I know what I saw that golden night...
I woke to such a wondrous sight; that star that beckoned me-
I was to bring a dove to share my flight."

"So let us not give up our dream, to go and see The King,
my hooves are sand-filled, hot, and badly worn...
but fly up on my hump, dear friend; just rest your little wings.
I'll carry you 'til breaking of the morn."

The little dove was grateful for the time to rest her wings,
but secretly, she thought they'd gone too far.
All through the night they trudged ahead with simple heart-felt faith;
still watching through the heavens for that star.

Then suddenly,the camel's eyes were opened wide in joy,
but star-light proved his need to stay behind...
and in the distance dove could see a town called Bethlehem.
She quickly flew to see what she could find.

Dove landed in the rafters of the little stable bare
and there within the hay and cloth: The King!
she flew to greet Him with her one request for Him to grant,
and Baby Jesus woke to hear dove sing...

Soon dove was flying back to tell friend camel of her news.
She had a blessing right from Jesus' hand.
But camel didn't stir when dove so happily arrived
and she was just too scared to understand.

The little dove had never said a prayer like humans did-
but she believed in Jesus and The Way.
Lord Jesus gave His blessing for her dying camel friend;
that He would grant him life another day.

Oh Holy One so tender as He watched when camel came;
he walked and danced to music lyrical...
as dove sang praises to her God and Holy infant King,
dove wept to witness God's first miracle.

Doves are very special...I have raised two from the nest when Mother was killed by a hawk. I needed a good friend to walk with her.
