When He Was Alone

by sweetwoodjax

When he was alone behind the door,
he took off the mask he wore.
The painted smile upon his face
covered the pain of his disgrace.

He wept for all the pain he caused
when overcome by his many flaws.
The bruises he left on family and friends
caused everyone to leave him in the end.

He drank to forget, for death he prayed.
Each day he awoke, he was quite dismayed.
He painted on a smile each day
so with his son, he could laugh and play.

Nobody knew the face behind the mask,
but nobody ever thought to ask.
He visited the room where his son was dying.
He put on an act to keep from crying.

He gave his son laughter instead of fear.
He had given him pain for so many years.
He had to atone for the sins he had done.
He'd do anything for his sweet son.

He wept without ceasing when his son died.
People didn't ask why this clown cried.
He hung up his clown suit that very day
and prayed for death to come his way.
